Beneficial effects of the addition of polymeric waste to concrete

Description

The addition of polymeric waste to concrete in various forms (fibers or aggregates), has a series of beneficial effects on the properties of the resulting composite material, such as improved energy absorption and toughness, better impact resistance and ductility, reduction of weight and density, improvement of its insulating capacity (acoustic and thermal).

With regard to surface treatments, both chemical procedures based on the use of compounds that increase surface polarity (silane coupling agents) of waste and physical treatments with the same objective will be evaluated.

Objectives

  • Recovery of various polymeric waste (PEs and PVCs mainly), from recycling plants, through their physical-chemical treatment and their subsequent addition to cementitious matrices.
  • Design of experiments and dosages of cementitious matrices with the addition of polymeric waste, to optimize the properties of the resulting material.

Actions

  • Selection, characterization and treatment of polymeric waste.
  • Dosage design. Test tube manufacturing.
  • Microstructural and durable characterization of composites.
  • Mechanical characterization of composites.
  • Prototype manufacturing for each application.
  • Ecodesign. Economic and commercial evaluation. Industrialization evaluation.

Expected results

  • Addition of plastic aggregates and resins.
  • Manufacture of semi-structural lightened concrete to be used as a lightened core of sandwich panels.
  • Manufacture of semi-structural concretes to be used as New Jersey type barriers.
  • Manufacture of mortars and/or concrete repair, for conservation and structural or semi-structural rehabilitation.
