DELOREAN

New raw materials from the treatment of waste generated in the automative industry

Description

DELOREAN aims to obtain new raw materials from the treatment of waste generated in a critical sector in the region, the automative industry. The three wastes investigated (tires, lubricating oils and polypropylene) are generated in high quantities and their polluting nature makes it necessary to develop new ways for their management and use.

Faced with the traditional options for managing these wastes, DELOREAN investigates a cascade recovery process consisting of therchemical degradations followed by biotechnological fermentations to transform them into bio-products.

Optimizing the combination for each residue → bioproduct value line constitutes the main challenge of the project.

Objectives

  • Use a raw material waste from the automative industry.
  • Generate degradation products that can be usead as a carbon source in biotechnological processes.
  • Generate a portfolio of various bioproducts of interest in different sectors through the use of different microorganisms.
  • Calculate the carbon footprint of the proposed technologies.

Actions

  • Study of different conditions to optimize thermochemical and biotechnological techniques using model compounds.
  • Analytical monitoring using various techniques: CG-MS, GC-TCD, HPLC-UV, HPCL-RID, SEM, FTIR, SEC.
  • Experimenting with real samples.
  • Coordinated work of four working groups, each of them formed by several researchers.

Expected Results

  • Obtaining different degradation products depending on the starting residue and the thermochemical degradation conditions.
  • Modification of degradation conditions to obtain the most favorable products for fermentations with microorganisms.
  • Optimization of the quantities of biproducts generated in biotechnological treatments.
  • Development of a process with a negative carbon footprint.
