CARTIF Projects

High-pressure processes for the generation of high value-added products

Description

Through the installation of a 100 L reactor, this project seeks to validate and optimise thermochemical processes for the conversion of waste into high added value products. Technologies such as hydrothermal carbonisation, depolymerisation of lignocellulosic biomass and the valorisation of plastics will be studied, facilitating their industrial application. This will improve CARTIF’s research capacity, generate new knowledge and facilitate its transfer to industry, contributing to the circular economy in strategic sectors.

Objectives

  • Validation of hydrothermal carbonisation technology.
  • Validation of the method for obtaining bio-char by pyrolysis or carbonisation of dry waste.
  • Validation of the method of depolymerisation of condensation plastics by solvolysis or lignin depolymerisation processes to obtain phenolic products.
  • Validation of the treatment of plastic waste mixtures for isolation of high purity plastics by selective dissolution treatment.
  • Prospecting of the production line of materials such as polymerisation of plastics.

Expected Results

  • Validation of pilot-scale thermochemical processes for waste recovery.
  • Production of hydrochar from sewage sludge.
  • Obtaining phenolic compounds by depolymerisation of lignin.
  • Recovery of polymers and plastic monomers from complex waste.
  • Scale-up of extractive and depolymerisation processes, exploring new applications in polymerisation of plastics, bioadhesives and sustainable biomaterials.

R&D Line

  • Research on thermochemical processes and intensification of pressure processes for the transformation of plastics, biomasses and recalcitrant waste into value-added products.
