Description

The LEONARDO project—flexibility services provision enabled from aggregated industrial prosumers—is dedicated to unlocking the untapped potential of industrial sectors as key contributors to EU energy flexibility. By aggregating industrial Demand-Side Flexibility (idsf) through advanced Energy Management Systems (emss) and creating a centralized Industrial Flexibility Knowledge Hub (IFKH), LEONARDO enables industries to actively participate in the energy transition while enhancing grid stability and reducing peak loads.

LEONARDO’s core concept is to optimize collaborative industrial demand flexibility by aggregating diverse EMSs within clusters of industries in close physical proximity. The project addresses interoperability challenges, enhances EMS functionalities, and evaluates the value of industrial flexibility solutions in real-life pilot environments. The IFKH acts as a one-stop shop for information and resources, including the FlexifyMyIndustry-Assistant, an industry-first tool that allows companies to assess their flexibility potential and validate access to various flexibility markets through standardized metrics.

Objectives

  • Unlocking flexibility at scale by aggregating diverse industrial energy resources to optimize the response to grid needs in different markets.
  • Addressing key interoperability challenges that limit the scalability and replicability of flexibility services in diverse industrial environments.
  • Enhancing EMS functionalities for advanced energy and industrial process control.
  • Leverage LEONARDO’s industrial flexibility solutions in different energy and flexibility markets, with varying levels of maturity and requirements.
  • Lead a comprehensive campaign to drive interest and participation among industrial consumers in the possibilities of flexibility products, promoting the widespread adoption of LEONARDO services.

Actions

  • Provide ontological and semantic models based on SAREF for data representation.
  • Ensure interoperability between monitoring systems, TSOs/DSOs, and legacy systems.
  • Provide data collection mechanisms.
  • Develop the service related to demand flexibility considering external signals (e.g., energy prices).
  • Define the Industrial Flexibility Readiness Indicator.

CARTIF is the leader of the “End-to-End Semantic Interoperability and User-Dashboard” about the data ingestion, management and interoperability. Moreover, CARTIF implements the service related to demand flexibility based on flexibility market signals.

Expected Results

  • Semantic models and ontologies for standard data representation.
  • ETL mechanisms for data collection and management based on Pentaho technology.
  • Data lake for data harmonization, including quality and interoperability mechanisms.
  • Energy demand flexibility service in industry.
  • Industrial Flexibility Readiness Indicator.

LEONARDO will implement and test its solutions across three pilot sites: Italy, Austria, and Bulgaria/Greece. Each pilot will serve as a living laboratory for EMS aggregation, iDSF functionalities, and industrial flexibility assessment tools.

R&D Line

  • Digitization of the building and generation of digital twins.
