LIFE ALGAECAN

Towars a watewater treatment with microalgae and solar energy

Description

The LIFE ALGAECAN Project proposes a new effluents treatment system that combines cost-effective heterotrophic microalgae cultivation with spray drying of the collected microalgae to obtain a product of commercial interest as raw material for the production of biofertilisers, animal feed, bioplastics or biodiesel. The system is powered by renewable energies (solar energy supported, when necessary, by biomass), which will minimise the carbon footprint and operating costs of the process. The final effluent quality will be very high, allowing reuse for equipment cleaning and irrigation purposes.

Objectives

  • To demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of an innovative concept for fruit and vegetables processing industry (FVPI) wastewater treatment based on heterotrophic microalgae culture to substitute the traditional aerobic digestion.
  • To replicate this model in facilities of two European countries (Spain and Slovenia).
  • To promote the transferability of the LIFE ALGAECAN model to other facilities and EU members.

Actions

  • Preparatory actions.
  •  Implementation actions.

  • Design, construction and operation of a demonstrator in two target areas (Spain and Slovenia).
  • Dissemination of project results through various communication channels (web page, press releases, etc.) to target groups.
  • Project management activities.

Expected results

  • Obtaining a final effluent of high quality, which can be reused in irrigation or discharged into watercourses..
  • To reduce the cost of FVPI treatment over 80% when comparing with a traditional aerobic treatment plant.
  • To reduce by 100% the environmental impact associated with waste sludge generation and nutrient losses in traditional aerobic treatment systems.
  • Valorization of microalgae as animal feed and biofertilizers.

LIFE VALPORC

LIFE VALPORC

The goal of the LIFE + VALPORC is to demonstrate a sustainable alternative to the management of pig carcasses and manure, focusing on the environmental problems derived from its current management and valorizing these wastes by transforming them into biofuels (biogas and biodiesel) and organic fertilizers,

BIOREFINERÍA FT

The FT BIOREFINERY Project consists in developing a technology that allows obtaining 2nd generation liquid biofuels (synthetic diesel) and electrical energy, through the application of gasification and co-gasification processes, of different types of solid and / or liquid waste ( herbaceous biomass, lignocellulosic, glycerin, etc.)
