LIFE EUCALYPTUS ENERGY

Eucalyptus biomass pyrolysis for the production of electrical energy

Description

This project involves the pyrolysis of eucalyptus biomass for production of electric energy and biochar. The aim is to make use of residual biomass from eucalyptus forests, which would otherwise receive treatment of waste being dumped in the forest with the consequent risks.

The process consists of obtaining a pyrolysis gas. This gas, once cleaned, goes to the generating element for the production of electrical energy. In addition to the gas, the process also generates biochar, a solid product with a high capacity for stabilising the soil and capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Objectives

  • Optimization of electrical production from eucalyptus biomass.
  • Utilization of the biochar as a carbon abatement technology.
  • Integration of biomass collection, pyrolysis, gas cleaning, electricity generation and biochar utilization processes.
  • Forest improvement by collecting and valorizing their biomass.

Actions

  •  Plant design and construction.
  • Integration of the project technologies.
  • Plant optimization and start-up.
  • Biochar aplication.
  • Plant results analysis.
  • Project dissemination.

Expected results

  • Technical and economic analysis of electricity production from eucalyptus biomass.
  • Determination of the potential of biochar as a carbon storage tool.
  • Development of intelligent pellets using biochar and the study of its reliability.
  • Improvement of the sustainability of forests by adding value to biomass.
