MAPAS-CYL

Improving agriculture through the application of phytotechnology and agrotechnology techniques for the comprehensive study of the plant, water and soil axes in Castile and León

Description

MAPAS – CyL is represented by a consortium formed by two companies – VEOLIA, as the lead partner, and BIOMAR – along with the CARTIF Technology Center as the research organization. The capabilities and activities of the three entities complement each other to jointly address the challenges presented.

The overall objective of the project is to comprehensively improve agriculture in Castile and León by integrating the plant, water, and soil system, in order to move towards agriculture adapted to the new conditions of osmotic stress (water and salinity) resulting from climate change, thus improving the current agricultural ecosystem.

The project’s results have been designed to provide the agricultural sector with tools and strategies in two areas: the development of bioproducts that improve crop adaptation to osmotic stress and research into halophilic crops for the utilization and reuse of saline/wastewater.

Objectives

  • Obtaining, formulating, and testing new bioproducts.
  • Studying the microbiota and its interactions in natural saline soils.
  • Applying phytotechnology to establish crops tolerant to extreme salinity in novel culture media.
  • Developing new water recovery technologies.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness and viability of solutions.

Actions

  • Formulation of new bioproducts for crop adaptation to osmotic stress resulting from climate change.
  • Solutions based on knowledge of the soil microbiome and the development of soil probiotics.
  • Study of alternative farming methods compatible with abiotic stress environments.
  • Research into innovative technological tools for water resource management and utilization.
  • Study of the efficacy and efficiency of developed prototypes and products and their impact on soil quality.

Expected results

  • Formulation and laboratory-scale evaluation of bioproducts based on microorganisms and microalgae with osmoprotective properties.
  • Study and characterization of different soils focusing on microbiome functionality. Development of halotolerant probiotic formulations with osmoprotective properties against saline soils.
  • Development of a biofilter composed of bioactive filter modules and a passive organic filter.
  • Validation of the new bioproducts and evaluation of the effectiveness of the different biofilters developed during the project.

R&D Line

  • Research into the use of new protein sources and application of innovative technologies for the modification of the technofunctional properties of ingredients and obtaining new food products.
