PENNYFUEL

Demonstrate the technical-economic-environmental viability of a sustainable biodiese production strategy

Description

The PENNYFUEL project under the title: “Development of a sustainable strategy for the production of biodiesel and other compounds of interest, from a new plant species, and by innovative catalytic processes”, aims to demonstrate the technical-economic-environmental feasibility of a sustainable strategy for the production of biodiesel, based on Thlaspi arvense (Pennycress) oil.

Specifically, the oil obtained from this seed will be used for the biodiesel production by cavitation, using low-cost catalysts based on CaO.

In addition, the pennycress cake will be used to develop a natural biofumigant, while the glycerin will be used to obtain mono- and triglycerides.

Objectives

  • Optimisation Thlaspi arvense culture for biofuel production.
  • Development of low-cost heterogeneous basic catalysts for biodiesel production by cavitation.
  • Obtaining a natural product with biocidal properties, from the pennycress cake.
  • Development of a viable process for the valorization of crude glycerin, to produce mono- or triglycerides.

Actions

  • Milestone 1: Optimization of the Thlaspi arvense crop to increase oil production.
  • Milestone 2: Optimization of biofuel process.
  • Milestone 3: Demonstration of the use of automotive biofuel.
  • Milestone 4: Revalorization of by-products derived from the oil and biofuel production process.

Expected results

  • Pennycress seed with improved production and quality.
  • New natural product with biocidal properties.
  • Heterogeneous basic catalysts of low cost for the biodiesel production.
  • Transesterification process by cavitation and heterogeneous catalysts.
  • Monoglycerides used as functional additives in animal feed market, and as emulsifiers in cosmetics.
  • Triglycerides used in the biodiesel production.
