REBELION

Lithium battery recycling

Description

The general objective of the REBELION project is to obtain a innovative technique process in the region of Castilla and Leon for the recovery of materials present in lithium batteries of electric vehicles at the end of their life cycle and the reuse of those cells in good conditions for health for a 2º life in stationary energy storage.

The main aim of the project is to validate the results of the research carried out and fix different technological parameters that makes feasible the developed technology from a technique and economic point of view.

REBELION embrace the research of a new process and within the creation of a new technology.

      Objectives

      • Research to obtain an innovative process, carrying out an experimental design (DOE) that allows a recovery of cathode materials from lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles of more than 90% through the use of readily biodegradable organic acids, which improve the state of the art.
      • To characterise the materials present in the non-reusable cells in order to know the content and morphology of the cathodic and anhodic components of the lithium-ion batteries.
      • Generate a database from the cell identification and cell characterisation processes.
      • To develop a globally optimal technological process for the reuse and complete recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles, allowing them to be exploited in a modular or complete way.

      Actions

      • Characterization of present materials in non-reusable cells through the ICP analysis and/or X-ray diffraction.
      • Development of a database as of cell identification process and the characterization of the same.
      • Conditioning and treatment of the black mass. Obtaining metal oxides by means of  an organic leaching process.

      Expected Results

      • Cells characterised and identified. To know the metal/metal oxide content of the cells.
      • Databases to ensure traceability of reusable cells and different models and types of batteries.
      • Design of a organic leaching process at a laboratory level that can be scaled up to pilot scale.
      • Recovery of more than 90% of the metal oxides present in laboratory scale spent cathodes, to be used as precursors for the synthesis of new cathodes.

        R&D Line

        • Research on metal recovery processes from batteries, brine, electronic and other waste streams and equipment.
