Chemical recycling of polyurethane foam waste present in footwear

Description

In recent years, the generation of waste components of footwear has increased. Therefore, it is proposed to develop a chemical recycling process of the polyurethane foam waste, to obtain the polyol again, to re-manufacture new products (recycled soles) that fulfil the requirements for the footwear sector and that can be put on the market in a short space of time.

In this way, the life cycle of polyurethane foams is closed by reducing the environmental impacts of the footwear sector, giving an added value to the waste and reducing the production costs of these foams and the prices of the final products.

Objectives

  • Optimization of the glycolysis of the soles waste to obtain the polyol by which the foam is formed.
  • Optimization of the foaming formula by adding isocyanates and additives to the polyol obtained.
  • Obtaining new soles with recycled PUR foams and characterization, based on their microstructure, mechanical properties, durability, etc..
  • Close the life cycle of PUR foams.

Actions

  • Collection, characterization and pretreatment of PUR soles waste Chemical recycling of PUR waste by glycolysis. Process optimization and characterization of the polyol obtained.
  • Ecodesign for new PUR foams.
  • Manufacture of new soles with recycled PUR foams. Optimization of the foaming formula.
  • Characterization of the products obtained.

Expected results

  • Characterization and pretreatment performed to the soles waste.
  • Chemical recycling optimized to PUR soles waste.
  • Obtaining high quality and high purity polyol. Characterization.
  • Manufacture of new PUR foam soles, with as much recovered polyol as possible.
  • Characterization of the new soles to verify that they fulfil the minimum technical requirements necessary for their use.
