On-line Seminar “Natural Radioactivity in Water for Human Consumption”
The seminar “Natural radioactivity in water for human consumption” is organized within the frame of the European project LIFE ALCHEMIA, financed by the LIFE program of the European Union. The aim of this project is the demonstration of alternative technologies for the removal of natural radioactivity contained in underground water used for human drinking, guaranteeing the observance of the current legislation and minimizing the generation of NORM residues (naturally occurring radiactive materials).
The seminar expects to emphasize the current problem related to the removal of natural radioactivity in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) fed with underground water, as well as the management of NORM residues generated in theses facilities and the national legal requirements that their operators must fit.
The experience acquired during the running of different municipal DWTPs that use reverse osmosis filtration to remove natural radioactivity in some small villages in Almeria province (Spain) will be presented together with the results obtained during the running of the LIFE ALCHEMIA pilot plants in Spain and Almeria.
