LEGUATER

Design and development of a system for the management and treatment of legume processing water through innovative microalgae and membrane technologies.

Description

Development and application of two innovative technologies for the treatment of legume processing water both in the laboratory and in a pilot project, 1) cultivation of heterotrophic microalgae and 2) separation by optimised membrane ultrafiltration, with the aim of obtaining quality water suitable for reuse and a by-product composed mainly of starch and nutrients, with potential added value. Analysis of solid leguminous waste from the process as a way of valorising its properties as a biofertiliser by-product.

    Objectives

      • Research new technologies for the purification of process water and the recovery of starch and nutrients to obtain an innovative technical process.
      • Apply the Circular Economy strategy to the production process through the management and optimisation of water consumption.
      • Study the recovery of waste in order to facilitate its transformation into products and achieve energy efficiency in the process.

    Actions

    • Water cycle management
    • Design and development of new treatment processes
    • Implementation and operation of treatment processes in relevant environment
    • Solid waste recovery and energy efficiency studies

    Expected results

    • Identification of the key points in the process where water consumption is high and treatment and recirculation is necessary.
    • Identification of operating conditions (flow rate, temperature, residence time, etc.) on the effectiveness of membranes and microalgae culture for starch recovery.

    R&D Line

    • Design and development of biological processes for organic waste treatment: anaerobic (co-)digestion with/without pre-treatment, microalgae, dark fermentation and bio-electrochemical processes.

    FRONTSH1P

Frontsh1p will contribute to further the green transition in the Polish region of Lódzkie. A region that on the one hand, traditionally heavily relies on coal extraction, and on the other hand, has pioneered circular (bio)economy since the early 2000s. The region has always been in the forefront of innovation and has become one of the leading regions in the field of circular economy.
